The inability of the state body to complete its audit of the county prompted Standard & Poors to stop issuing the county a credit rating and led the SBOA to threaten to invoke new state statute that would allow for the state to hire accountants to take over the auditor’s or treasurer’s office or both because the records cannot audited.
Lake County officials are meeting with the State Board of Accounts Tuesday to discuss the next steps in bringing the body into compliance after a breakdown in the accounting process left its annual audit incomplete.
“It is our intention to work with the entities who may be on this path and give them opportunities to fix their issues, if they are able,” Leatherman said. Indeed, Lake County Commissioners already has hired forensic accountants Baker Tilly to determine what went wrong. The problems began surfacing after the county transitioned from Lawson accounting software to the Oracle platform.
