The Neretva River, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is known for its unique biodiversity, but a hydropower boom is putting this at risk. Scientists are uniting to save the waterway.

The Neretva River carves its way through Bosnia and Herzegovina’s impenetrable forest. A mesmerizing blue-green, it runs 140 miles from deep within the Dinaric Alps to the Adriatic Sea – at some points disappearing into subterranean channels before re-emerging in bubbling springs.

As the water becomes dirtier, plants and animals in the river and along its banks are affected. And the nature of the river means that the pollution cannot be contained: “What you do to a little river, you do to the bigger one, and in the end to the ocean.” Hydropower hotspot There is, however, a delicate balancing act between these environmental challenges and the growing demand for renewable energy.
