Passengers travelling on peak time services on Scotland's largest rail operator will face huge fare rises at the end of next month.
SNP Minsters are to end the pilot on abolishing peak rail fares over claims the policy favours the better off.
The £40m a year scheme on ScotRail, which has been in place since October, made fares the same at all times of the day.The SNP Government last week announced an emergency curb on spending and the pilot has been axed. "In light of the financial challenges facing the Scottish Government and the level of additional and continuing subsidy that would be required to continue the pilot versus its contribution towards tackling climate change with modal shift from car and tackling child poverty which are key Scottish Government missions, the pilot will end on 27th September 2024."
“Peak fares are a stealth tax on workers which is bad for the climate, bad for our communities and bad for people’s wallets. Fares have increased an eye-watering 9% during the trial alone with commuters now facing a double whammy of increased and peak fares next time they board.
