But suggestions that HS2 will not terminate in central London as proposed – and instead stop at Old Oak Common in the suburbs of west London – has given fresh fuel to politicians in the North arguing against the project.HS2 bosses are weighing up ways to cut costs amid spiralling inflationary pressures, with options including delaying the opening of a tunnel to Euston until 2038, or axeing it altogether.
“The whole argument about HS2 was about capacity, I’m not convinced by that issue any more and if it’s not about capacity then I’m not certain what HS2 is doing for the long-term economic advancement of my area.” He also hit out at the Government’s wider rail plans for the North amid constant uncertainty around its commitment to building Northern Powerhouse Rail in full which would improve West to East connections.
Henri Murison, chief Executive of lobby group Northern Powerhouse Partnership, argued that the new station being built at Old Oak Common will not have enough platforms to deliver a full service between London and Manchester.
