A combination of talent and more playing time could excel Seahawks’ Boye Mafe into a breakout year 💪 Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks are expected to field a fierce pass rush in 2023. One in-house option that’s being counted on to take a sizable step forward is sophomoreThe No. 40 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Seahawks brought Mafe along slowly throughout his rookie year. The former Minnesota standout appeared in all 17 regular-season contests, recording 3.0 sacks, 22 stops, 10 quarterback pressures, and 37 total tackles, per Pro Football Focus., 187 of which were true pass-rushing snaps.
Mafe showed desired flashes of improvement toward the conclusion of the Seahawks’ season. Mafe posted four of his 12 total pressures in Week 18 and Seattle’s lone playoff contest, a wild-card loss to the San Francisco 49ers. One of Mafe’s 3.0 sacks occurred in the regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Golden Valley, Minnesota native has the athletic tools necessary to develop into a more consistent pass rusher. Mafe’s first-step explosiveness is evident on tape. Mafe has notable short-area burst, acceleration, and agility, all of which flash early in reps and illustrate his athleticism in space.
Mafe was always viewed as a high-tools prospect that was going to require some extra seasoning. Athleticism and effort were at the forefront of Mafe’s profile throughout the pre-draft process. Coming out of Minnesota, Mafe required better consistency as a pass rusher as he continued to grow a better feel for the game. Having a year under his belt in Seattle’s defensive system should help Mafe acclimate quicker in year two.
The Seahawks had no issues getting after quarterbacks despite Mafe being limited to a part-time contributor role. Seattle recorded a seventh-best 45.0 sacks throughout the regular season.
