LATEST: Up to 300,000 people have been left homeless in the aftermath of yesterday's devastating explosion, Beirut's governor says.
More than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate was stored in the warehouse that was the scene of the explosion that also injured thousands of people, authorities say.
The city’s hospitals reached capacity soon after, meaning some of the wounded were forced to travel as far as Tripoli, 50 miles north, to receive treatment. At least three hospitals were damaged by the blast. Beirut's governor said up to 300,000 people had been left homeless in the aftermath of the explosion.
