The boy’s mother, who later was pronounced dead at an area hospital, was located near the harbor’s launch ramp between 8 and 9 p.m. Wednesday
, according to Monterey County Undersheriff Keith Boyd. It was too early Thursday to release details of the mother’s identity, Boyd said.
“There’s a lot of information that we’re trying to assess to determine the how, the why, that led to this situation in fact occurring,” Boyd said. “At this point, we’re not able to release a lot of information of that aspect.” According to the Coast Guard, a good Samaritan initially notified authorities shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday that he had located a 3-year-old boy near Jetty Road. The boy said his mother was missing in the water, Coast Guard authorities wrote in a press release. After a conversation with the child’s family, the young boy later indicated to emergency responders that his 7-year-old brother also had gone into the water, Coast Guard and State Parks officials said.
