The Windmill in Southport was among those nominated in the North West category for Pub and Bar of the Year in the National Pub and Bar Awards. It was up against The White Bull at Oswaldtwistle, The Brown Horse Inn, in Cumbria, The Crown and Kettle in Greater Manchester and The Swan at Marbury in Cheshire.
The seaside pub did not win the category with the top spot being claimed by The Swan. The Windmill was one of just 94 venues across the country making the prestigious list.The Windmill is described as a 'typical English pub' and first opened in Southport in 1833. The building originally was three fishermen's cottages but later expanded under various brewers.
In November 2018, Neil Walsh and his partner Tom became custodians of The Windmill. The pub's bosses said they are delighted with the award and nomination, the ECHO reports. Writing on Facebook, they said: "Well isn’t this a surprise! We have been named Merseyside Pub and Bar of The Year in the National Pub and Bar Awards.
"We're now off to London in June to receive our award and compete against all the other county winners for the main title. The National Pub and Bar Awards are the most prestigious awards for the pub and bar industry so it’s a great honour to receive this award.
