Seattle City Council on Monday approved a $3.5 million cut to the city’s police department for the rest of the year and signaled deeper cuts could be on the way

, while some $17 million is being invested into community public safety following months of anti-racism demonstrations and calls to defund the police."Defund the Police" march from King County Youth Jail to City Hall in Seattle on August 5.The cuts, which amount to less than 1% of the police department’s budget, was approved by a council vote of 7–1 as part of an overall rebalancing of the 2020 budget.

The $3.5 million is just a fraction of the 50% cut to the police department’s $409 million budget that protesters demanded. But the new budget will see some 100 fewer police officers, while executive pay—including the chief’s $285,000 salary—will be reduced and the budget for SWAT teams, officers in school, harbor patrol, homeless outreach team and training and recruitment will also fall. in recent weeks, renewed by protests in nearby Portland.

The cuts were described by council President Lorena Gonzalez as a “down payment” for future potential reductions to the police department’s budget.Seattle Times
