A team of mental health professionals will now be responding along with police and firefighters to calls of people who are in crisis in Seattle.
The pilot program, which started Monday, will provide service from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. in downtown Seattle, the Chinatown-International District and SODO.
“We get to try to minimize a moment of pain and distress," CARE Chief Amy Smith said at a news conference on Monday. "We get to try to connect someone to services quickly, but we’re not in the case management business — we’re responding to 911 calls." The pilot CARE team will not come anywhere near being able to respond to all crisis and welfare calls in the city at first. According to city data, there have been 2,686 calls of a "person down" this year, and 5,553 wellness or welfare checks.
