Answers are slow to come about what’s being done to quell the mounting violence aboard Seattle public transit.
KOMO News reached out to Metro and King County Executive Dow Constantine for answers about the measures they are taking but neither agreed to interviews.
At a press event on Friday, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and Sound Transit CEO Julie Timm responded to the public’s concerns about additional measures being taken.“The safety issues are of critical concern,” Harrell said. “All I can say is we remain committed. We have systems in place to improve what the riders want. We realize for many this is their only source of transportation and I have confidence in both Julie leadership and the county council's leadership on listening to the concerns.
“We have a rapid response team that we just stood up recently that is able to get to incidents faster,” Timm said. “Having more security on more platforms means that when there's an incident we can get to the trains faster. We can get to the platforms faster." In an emailed statement, Metro said it has added more security on the H Line, the route where a man was shot and killed aboard a bus on Tuesday. As far as staffing, Metro transit police are budgeted for 79 positions and have 61 filled including deputies, sergeants and plain-clothes detectives working in squads across day, night and graveyard shifts, according to a spokesperson.
Additional information is coming in from these agencies and KOMO News will be updating this report throughout the day.
