Seattle's City Hall Park reopened to the public nearly two years after it was overrun by the homeless and attracted crime and drug use.

Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent AP Diaz said this summer is the launch period to test the city’s plan and decide what changes or improvements can be made down the road. He believes the combination of the new lighting, activities at the park, and the park rangers will make it a welcoming and safe space.

“I’m excited and hopeful for a new day," King County Superior Court Judge Patrick Oishi stated. "I do believe Mayor Harrell is committed to making the park a welcoming space.” “In years past, City Hall Park has been extremely problematic, and it came to a head during the pandemic," he explained. "The lawlessness in this park was off the scale. There were assaults, and there was a murder here.”

Petrovich and other longtime residents are hoping for a resurgence in tourism despite core issues in Pioneer Square involving drugs and crime. It's a concern KOMO News took to the city.
