Again and again, during questioning by senators from both political parties, Dettelbach pledged to enforce the gun laws passed by Congress and vowed to “never let politics in any way influence my action as ATF director.”

FILE - President Joe Biden's nominee to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Steve Dettelbach speaks during an event in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, April 11, 2022. More than 140 former Justice Department officials are throwing their support behind President Joe Biden’s nominee to run the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Democratic senators at the hearing repeatedly expressed outrage over Congress’ failure to curtail sales of automatic weapons like the AR-15 rifle used in the latest school shooting, while Republicans criticized gun control advocates for wanting to “crackdown on law-abiding Americans and federal firearms licensees who want to follow the law” instead of the criminals who commit gun crimes.

“Even in my period as a nominee before this hearing, I have tried to and have reached out and communicated with people who are representing or in the industry,” Dettelbach told Grassley. “And I know it is very important for an ATF director to hear from all interested parties, whether they’re victim and survivor groups or people in the industry, to see what their perspective is.”

“I can think of no better way to support law enforcement, to reject hate and extremism, to keep America safe from violent crime, then for the committee and the entire Senate to confirm student Steve Dettelbach as ATF Director,” Brown told the committee.
