Republicans accused Democrats of trying to further undermine public confidence in a court that’s issuing conservative opinions they don’t like.
Many Republican lawmakers, including Texas Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz,The Texans joined fellow Republicans on the committee in criticizing the legislation as a bid by Democrats to erode the court’s influence in the face of a conservative majority issuing opinions on abortion, gay rights, affirmative action and a host of other hot-button issues.In addition to requiring the court to adopt a code of conduct, the bill calls for new disclosure requirements on gifts, travel and income.
He also observed – accurately – that the bill is “dead as fried chicken” on the Senate floor and in the Republican-controlled House. The committee adopted one GOP amendment condemning racist rhetorical attacks on Thomas after tweaking the language to clarify they were condemning such rhetoric against any justice.
