MLB: Sergio Romo pitched his final game for the San Francisco Giants on Monday at Oracle Park
Romo received a standing ovation as he walked from the Giants’ dugout to the bullpen after the third inning. He started to warm up after the fourth inning, then entered the game to a thunderous ovation to start the seventh.
Romo’s outing Monday marked his last in a Giants uniform, and in a big-league park. He’s retiring, ending a 15-year MLB career that included nine seasons and three World Series championships with the Giants. “I wasn’t asking for this opportunity,” Romo told this news organization Sunday. “But there’s an organization, there’s a fan base that feels that I deserve this, and to me, that’s one of the most humbling parts about all of this. I don’t want it to end but, as they say, all things come to an end, even the good ones. So, it’s just my time.”
A couple of hours before the first pitch, as the Giants were wrapping up batting practice, Romo was in the outfield, talking with fans through the right field gate. He then walked over to the fence in right-center field and gave autographs to a group of fans who were chanting his name and were able to enter the ballpark a bit early.In other words, Romo was soaking it all in.
