The once-revolutionary comedy really should have ended a year ago - this is irritating, on-the-nose and impossible to emotionally connect with. What happened?
against the naysayers. When it first arrived on Netflix in 2019, its no-nonsense attitude towards teenage sex felt genuinely revolutionary. It was effortlessly diverse in its characters’ perspectives and while some decried its strangely American aesthetic, I found it to be just on the right side of weird. Today, the fourth and final series starts – and I’m disappointed.
We catch up with best friends Otis and Eric as they prepare to move on to sixth form at a brand-new swanky college. They quickly learn they’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto. This new school is “student led”; there are yoga sessions, a “no gossiping” rule and a sex therapist . It is the embodiment of what right-wing commentators want us to believe “woke” schools are really like. If I wanted to give the series the benefit of the doubt, I’d say its portrayal of the college is a tongue-in-cheek response to those arguments, but most of all, as a long-time fan of the show, I found it nothing more than irritating.
