Wood goes 3.2 IP, gets Votto out twice, including strikeout on his final pitch. Giants starters have allowed 2 runs in 16⅓ IP this spring, a 1.10 ERA.
“It’s always a lot of fun to play that chess match with him,” said Wood, who didn’t allow a run over 3⅔ innings, the longest outing by a Giants starter this spring. “He’s kind of the starting pitcher version of a hitter. He’s always extremely prepared, has a good plan for what he typically wants to do depending on who he’s facing. … It’s definitely nice to face somebody of that caliber and get a few swing and misses on him, for sure.
Nobody embodies the two “core philosophies” of the Giants pitching staff, as outlined by manager Gabe Kapler, better than Wood. That is: work fast and throw strikes.
