SF Giants chairman Greg Johnson to The Athletic: ‘We’re very much committed to Farhan and his team.’

SAN FRANCISCO — Despite the Giants’ disappointing 2022 season, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi will return next season and, by the sound of it, has earned job security beyond that.

It is all but mathematically guaranteed that the Giants will not make the playoffs this season. Despite three World Series titles in the first half of the 2010s, San Francisco hasn’t made the postseason in consecutive years since 2002-03. “We recognize that you have a team that did get older and that presents some challenges, and a farm system that I would say hasn’t progressed as quickly as we’d like to see. There’s been some injuries to key people and COVID has set back the timeline on development in some cases.”

Other pending free agents include left-hander Carlos Rodón, who can opt out of his two-year deal and should be in line for a major payday; first baseman Brandon Belt, who on Wednesday expressed his desire to continue to play after undergoing knee surgery; and third baseman Evan Longoria, whose option the club can either pick up for $13 million or decline for $5 million.
