Shane Bieber made his first rehab start since his right elbow injury in July.
It helps that he’s been able to go through the rehab process with teammate Triston McKenzie. Like Bieber, McKenzie is recovering from a right elbow injury. He was diagnosed with a strained ulnar collateral ligament and chose to rehab the injury instead of surgery.“We’re basically in lockstep right now,” said Bieber. “He took a little more time off with his injury, but I’m excited for him to go and compete here on Wednesday.
Bieber’s last start with the Guardians came right before the All-Star break. The Guardians opened the second half with a three-game series against the Rangers in Arlington, Texas. Bieber was examined by Dr. Keith Meister, team physician for the Rangers and an expert on elbow injuries.“But the elbow is tricky,” said Bieber. “You set up a plan. You work real hard at it and see where it goes.”That doesn’t mean he’s stopped dreaming.
The Guardians went into Tuesday night’s game against the Giants trailing the Twins by 7 1/2 games in the AL Central with 17 games left to play.
