McIlroy suffered a heartbreaking final round at the US Open as he finished second to Bryson DeChambeau
Shane Lowry has rallied behind Rory McIlroy following his US Open disappointment, taking to social media to ask fans to "be kind" after the Holywood star's crushing second-place finish at Pinehurst No. 2. Lowry shared a heartfelt message on Instagram in support of McIlroy on Monday night, who had been tantalisingly close to clinching his first US Open title since his maiden major win at Congressional 13 years ago with his last major victory coming at the US PGA in 2014.
McIlroy had looked poised for triumph, leading by two with just five holes remaining, but he incredibly missed from just over two feet on the 16th and another short putt on the 18th saw him concede defeat to Bryson DeChambeau. Following what he described as "probably the toughest" day on a golf course, McIlroy announced on social media that he would be taking a break from golf to reflect on the events.
In response, Lowry expressed his empathy and solidarity, posting: "From the outside looking in...this game is easy. But in reality it's the worst game of all. We are very fortunate to get what we do from this game but over the last 24 hours it's hit me. READ MORE: Rory McIlroy prize money after missing out on US Open
"We do it for not only ourselves but for our family, friends and fans. What Rory has gone through is as tough as it gets in our game but I would like to encourage people if anything please be kind."
