Shanghai reported around 3,500 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, as the outbreak in the city continued to grow.

The second five-day lockdown will begin on Friday and will target the city’s massive downtown area to the west of the Huangpu River. While under lockdown, residents will need to stay at home and deliveries of essentials will be dropped off at designated checkpoints near their homes. China’s National Health Commission—nearly 70% of the country’s total number. The financial hub also reported 50 of the country’s 1,219 symptomatic cases. A majority of Shanghai’s current outbreak has been classified under “asymptomatic cases” as local officials have carried out targeted mass testing in parts of the city.China has reported a total of 4,638 deaths from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
