... [+]: Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal fanned the flames of the NBA’s dispute with China over Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey’s pro-Hong Kong tweet on the opening night of the new basketball season.
Morey’s support for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protesters and a bungled initial response put the NBA in the crosshairs of China’s Communist Party, and the league’s response angered American politicians, who were concerned that the league might put its broadcasting and sponsorship deals in the world’s second-largest economy ahead of freedom of speech.
Speaking in L.A. on the opening night of the NBA season on Tuesday, Shaq said on the TNT pregame show: “Morey was right ... whenever you see something wrong going on in the world, you should have the right to say ‘that’s not right,’ and that’s what he did.” But he wasn’t the only one taking a stand in support of Hong Kong last night. Protesters at the Toronto Raptors vs. New Orleans Pelicans game were pictured wearing clothing with the slogan “The North stand with Hong Kong,” co-opting Toronto Raptors’ “We The North” marketing slogan. In L.A., fans also sported T-shirts featuring Morey’s tweet.
O’Neal’s comments stand in contrast to comments previously made by LeBron James, currently the league’s most high-profile player, who: O’Neal said on Tuesday: “We as American people, we do a lot of business in China and they know and understand our values, and we understand their values. And one of our best values here in America is free speech. We’re allowed to say what we want to say, and we’re allowed to speak up about injustices, and that’s just how it goes.
