Students posted photos of the gutted shark hanging from the rafters of Ponte Vedra High School on Snapchat.
According to Alex AuBuchon, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation, which is investigating the incident along with local law enforcement, at approximately 9 p.m. Wednesday a group of five PVHS students hung the shark carcass from the rafters of the school courtyard.
AuBuchon added,"We have learned the shark was harvested Tuesday night, gutted and stored in a freezer prior to being hung." The Record's news partner First Coast News spoke with a junior at PVHS Thursday who said,"it was done by one of the kids at our school, a senior for a senior prank and then he brought his friends from different schools to hang up the shark." "Some people think it's funny. I’m not sure why. I don’t think it's funny," he said.
According to St. Johns County Schools spokeswoman Christina H. Upchurch, if an individual or individuals are found to be responsible for the offense, they could face consequences for a Level 4 offense under the district's code of conduct. It carries potential penalties such as suspension, expulsion, transfer to an alternative school, referral to mental health services and/or criminal charges.Student says there were rumors the shark was pregnantThe animal was removed around 8 a.m.
