Tomas Hertl appeared to have tears in his eyes as he sang along to the Czech Republic’s national anthem prior to the start of the San Jose Sharks regular season game with the Nashville Predators at O2 Arena in Prague.
Those were easily the Sharks’ biggest highlights as they opened the season with a 4-1 loss to the Predators, a result that followed a similar script as years past. The Sharks will try to correct those issues Saturday when they play the Predators to conclude the NHL’s Global Series in Prague.The Sharks began Friday’s game playing the up-tempo style coach David Quinn has been preaching, as they stayed aggressive on the forecheck and fired pucks on Saros whenever possible.
Quinn felt the Sharks stayed engaged after Eeli Tolvanen scored 1:24 into the second period for a 2-1 Predators lead. But Niederreiter’s goal off a pretty pass from Dante Fabbro on a 2-on-1 basically sealed the deal. Most NHL teams have similar winning percentages under those circumstances. Plus, the Predators are expected to make the playoffs this season while the Sharks will struggle to stay out of the Pacific Division basement.“When you do get scored upon, you’ve got to fight back, which I thought we did after we gave up the first one early,” Quinn said. “But in the last 25 minutes, they really kind of set the tone and took it to us.
