Unfortunately, a red card for Luke Shaw saw a quick change of gameplan for the Three Lions.
Shaw was initially booked for timewasting before receiving his second yellow for a strong challenge, and was given his marching orders after the Italian players emplored the referee.With England leading by just one goal, Southgate opted to make a tactical alteration by bringing Kieran Trippier onto the pitch in order to bolster their defensive ranks.
But just 12 minutes after coming off the bench, it was Foden who was taken off in an attempt to help England see out the win. The decision from Southgate was justified as the Three Lions secured a 2-1 win, with Declan Rice and Harry Kane scoring in the first half.
