Twenty years old, and 70 billion song recognitions, oh my, Shazam has grown.
The iOS app was one of the debut apps when the App Store launched in 2008. The first song identified on the app was “How Am I Different” by Aimee Mann . The Android app came later in that year, by the way, in October 2008.
More interesting is which tracks intrigued people enough that they just had to know what they were. First to reach one thousand Shazams was “Cleanin’ Out My Closet” by Eminem in September 2002, while first to a million was much later, “TiK ToK” by Ke$ha almost eight years later, in February 2010.There are bigger figures to bandy about, too. The first artist to reach 100 million Shazams was David Guetta in May 2015.
You’ll be wanting to know the most Shazamed of all time, I dare say. Drake has the record for the most Shazamed artist, 350 million across songs he has led or featured on, with “One Dance” the most popular track . That’s less than half the figure for “Dance Monkey” by Tones And I, which is the most Shazamed song with over 41 million enquiries. And in the early days of 2580 texts, the most Shazamed was “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley, though Apple is coy about saying how many times it was Shazamed.
Nowadays, iPhone users can find Shazam in the Control Center, saving valuable seconds before the mystery track you want to identify finishes. Personally, I have it set as a shortcut so whenever I double-tap the back of the phone, Shazam appears. It’s a brilliant system and one of those apps that, once you’ve used it, you can’t quite imagine managing without.
