Sheila Trainor taught in Oak Park elementary schools for more than 12 years before a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis forced her to step back from teaching.
After leaving the classroom, Trainor continued sharing her love of reading with youngsters as a volunteer for story hours at Oak Park’s now-shuttered Magic Tree Bookstore. “Sheila was a very child-centered teacher,” said Paula O’Malley, retired principal of Whittier Elementary School in Oak Park. “Whatever were telling her was the most important thing in the world.” Trainor, 70, died of a combination of pneumonia and the lingering side effects of multiple sclerosis on Oct.
She continued to work in child care before taking a teaching job in Oak Park, after a year teaching kindergarten and first grade at Whittier Elementary School. “What stands out is how she embraced children where they were and she really appreciated and celebrated their essence,” said Dawn Deaton, a retired teacher at Whittier.
