The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society announced Thursday that the 172-foot schooner-barge Atlanta was found 35 miles off Deer Park, Michigan, in about 650 feet of water in Lake Superior.WHITEFISH POINT, Michigan — A ship that sank 130 years ago on Lake Superior has been found, reportedly in “wonderfully preserved” condition.
“It is rare that we find a shipwreck that so clearly announces what it is and the name-board of the Atlanta really stands out,” Bruce Lynn, executive director of the GLSHS, said in a statement. “It is truly ornate and still beautiful after 130 years on the bottom of Lake Superior.” With no sails, the Atlanta soon sank and the crew was forced into a lifeboat. After several hours of rowing, they came within site of the Crisp Point Life-Saving Station. However, the lifeboat overturned as they neared the station and only two of the crew made it safely to the beach. Five crew members died.
