Concerns have been raised that the current economic climate is driving people to commit crimes.
Poverty is driving desperate Renfrewshire people to shoplift to feed their family, a charity has warned.
Now specialists tackling poverty say the rapid increase in theft and shoplifting is “no surprise” due to soaring bills and food costs – which have left people struggling to make ends meet. The dedicated team of experienced journalists, responsible for the publication of the award-winning Express, will focus on breaking news, day and night, across Renfrewshire’s towns and villages.
Sharon McAulay, chief executive, said: “It’s no surprise that the statistics around shoplifting, and common theft, have increased significantly given the impact of the cost-of-living crisis. One reason why less cases are being solved by police could be a refocusing of police resources. Deputy Chief Constable Alan Speirs said the force is choosing to prioritise more serious crime as they too struggle financially.“Action is being taken to achieve savings. However, areas which encounter the greatest demand and which carry the greatest risk in keeping people safe, are being prioritised for resources to ensure policing continues to address harm and protect the vulnerable.
