. General manager Dave Ziegler and Jacobs haven’t made progress on a new contract. Despite the ongoing difficulties, the Raiders shouldn’t risk losing Jacobs to the Chiefs or Broncos.
Jacobs has been absent from training camp since declining to sign the tag, which would pay him $10.1 million for the 2023 campaign. The Raiders and Jacobs have remained in a stalemate since, failing to agree to a contract extension prior to the July 17 deadline for franchise-tagged players. Little to no progress has been achieved and the Raiders could consider rescinding the tag, which would make Jacobs an unrestricted free agent.
That’s where the Chiefs or Broncos could reveal themselves as contenders for his services. Offering Jacobs a one-year contract would provide him with an opportunity to face the Raiders twice in 2023. Jacobs could see an opportunity to maximize his value within a familiar division before reaching free agency again next offseason.
