Should there should be tougher penalties for not wearing a seatbelt? We want to hear your thoughts
New research has found that a majority of drivers are in favour of harsher punishments for those who drive without seatbelts, including issuing penalty points.
On January 31, 1983 it became mandatory for drivers to wear seatbelts in vehicles that had them fitted. However, many believe current laws are still too lenient. Some 24 percent of drivers believe the current rules, in which a motorist can be fined up to £500 for not buckling up, don't go far enough.
It comes after calls last year to introduce tougher measures that combat those who drive without wearing any sort of seatbelt. Top Trending Stories Today RAC road safety spokesman Simon Williams said: "Forty years on from the introduction of what is undeniably one the most important road safety laws, it’s still the case that far too many people don’t wear seatbelts – something that’s a factor in around 30 percent of all road deaths each year.
