A new documentary chronicling the formation, rise and break-up of The Go-Go's hits all the familiar 'Behind the Music' beats, but does so with a bracing, clear-eyed candor.

What sets it apart is its surfeit of archival footage highlighting the group's roots in the L.A. punk scene — guitarist Jane Wiedlin addresses the camera, mentioning attending a punk show at the Hollywood club The Masque, for example, and boom, there her younger self is, in grainy black-and-white, leaning on the stage while a group of shirtless mohawked safety-pinned young men thrash and spit and sneer on the stage before her.

In a medium so given to staged reenactments and place-holders , the film's determination to show its work is striking. succeeds to the considerable extent it does would seem to have less to do with the narrative technique director Ellwood brings to bear, and more to do with her timing.

In addition to their music, a crucial part of Go-Go’s history is the telling of Go-Go’s history. There was the sensational 1997 episode of VH1&39;s music documentary series Behind the Music, and both lead singer Belinda Carlisle and bassist Kathy Valentine have written fabulously entertaining memoirs (2010&39;s Lips Unsealed and this year’s All I Ever Wanted, respectively).
