A large secondary school in Shrewsbury has responded "strongly" after being rated inadequate by Ofsted inspectors, who found a "significant minority" of pupils misbehave in lessons.Pupils at Meole Brace School told inspectors when they visited over two days in May this year that incidents of racist comments, homophobic behaviour and sexual harassment were commonplace.
The report found some positive issues, including that the school leaders have worked closely with teachers to develop a broad and ambitious curriculum that stretches beyond the academic. But they added that"this is not always taught well, and pupils do not always gain the knowledge they need to be successful."
It adds:"Safeguarding leaders are knowledgeable and driven. They make sure that all staff receive the training they need to identify pupils who are at risk of harm. Inspectors told the school that they found concerns in an area of the behaviour and attitudes criteria. Headteacher Mr Doust, in a letter to parents, said:"We take the view that, even if Ofsted have in our view made a disproportionate and unfair overall judgment, they are still very important matters for us to address.
It is a group made up of over 30 students and staff, who advise senior leaders on future policy, and ensure that the voice of the school community is fully known and acted upon.
