More than 126,000 people have already signed Age UK’s online petition calling for the UK Government to reverse the new rules.
An online petition created by Age UK urging Chancellor Rachel Reeves not to make Winter Fuel Payments means-tested to ensure all State Pension ers receive additional annual heating bill help has received tens of thousands of signatures of support since it launched shortly after the announcement on Monday.
“Means-testing the Winter Fuel Payment, with no notice and no compensatory measures to protect poor and vulnerable pensioners, is the wrong policy choice, and one that will potentially jeopardise the health as well as the finances of millions of older people this winter - the last thing either they or the NHS needs.”Who qualifies for Winter Fuel Payment? The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual payment designed to help State Pensioners with higher heating costs during the colder months.
It’s important to be aware that the change to Winter Fuel Payment has only been confirmed in England and Wales so far as the payment is devolved to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Pension Credit Nearly 1.4m older people across Great Britain, including more than 126,800 living in Scotland, are currently receiving the means-tested benefit that could provide an average of £3,900 in support during the year ahead. However, the latest figures from the DWP suggest there are still 880,000 eligible pensioners not claiming the benefit they are entitled to.
