Giants catchers and pitchers are getting used to PitchCom, a device which Gabe Kapler believes will make giving signs with fingers obsolete.

SAN FRANCISCO — If your enjoyment of old-school baseball includes catchers communicating with pitchers by using their fingers between their legs while in a crouch, better watch closely in 2022.

“This is one of the first things in a long time that has made baseball simpler and I’m very happy with it and fortunate to be able to use it,” Casali said. “It’s almost like a QB listening to the helmet for the play, but it’s only me that can press the buttons.” With the season only three games old, the Giants are working PitchCom in gradually, although Kapler is insisting on it with runners on second base. That has traditionally been the time when opponents steal signs, relaying information to hitters with predetermined signs of their own as to the kind of pitch as well as location.

“It helps with just staying locked in and focused on the game,” Senzel told reporters. “It helps with anticipation. That’s what I think.” San Diego manager Bob Melvin, who spent a decade giving signs with his fingers, is open to change to make sure the game is on the up and up. Melvin hasn’t decreed his pitchers use it until they’re comfortable with the system.
