Simon Harris becomes the youngest Irish Taoiseach followng Leo Varadkar's resignation

Simon Harris was announced as Fine Gael’s new leader on 24 March, 2024 in Athlone, Ireland. He is expected to become Ireland’s next, and youngest-ever, PM in April Ireland’s further and higher education minister described his leadership win as “the absolute honour of my life” as he was announced as Fine Gael’s new leader in Athlone, Co Westmeath on Sunday afternoon.

Mr Harris said he would remain fully committed to the programme for government agreed with coalition partners Fianna Fail and the Green Party. He has so far stopped short of ruling out a general election this year but insisted such a poll was not his priority.The new Fine Gael leader said he was “overwhelmed and honoured” by the level of support he has secured for his Fine Gael leadership bid, and added on Sunday that he would repay the trust put in him with hard work.

Fine Gael deputy leader and enterprise minister Simon Coveney said that Mr Harris had secured the party leadership in a comprehensive way after nominations closed on Sunday.“I think he’s done a really good job in securing the leadership in as comprehensive a way as he has.” “He has a good relationship with all the ministers in this room and some of the people who’d like to be ministers too.The higher education minister, Simon Harris will become Ireland’s youngest prime minister at 37 after no other contenders came forward in the leadership race to lead Fine Gael. He will not become taoiseach until 9 April when the Dail resumes after Easter break

Other politicians in support of Mr Harris include Fine Gael TD and junior minister Neale Richmond, TD and former junior minister Frank Feighan, senators Tim Lombard and Michael Carrigy and MEPs Frances Fitzgerald and Maria Walsh, as well as Ms Humphreys, Ms Carroll MacNeill and Ms McEntee.
