Striker finished season among the top Premiership scorers after a remarkable 23-goal haul in all competitions.
Simon Murray insists Don Cowie played a huge part in him becoming one of the Premiership’s top marksmen this season. And the 23-goal hitman insists the soon-to-become boss is the right man to get Ross County firing again next season too.
Of his 23 goals, 10 came in the 16 games since Cowie took over. Eight of his 14 in the league - which saw him sit alongside Kyogo in the top seven Premiership marksmen - arrived under Cowie’s stewardship. Number 22 and 23 arrived in Sunday’s dismantling of Raith that secured the top flight status. "Don took over the club at a really difficult time. He showed a real calmness and got us all together again. He's a great guy and a great person. He had an unbelievable playing career. It feels like he's been a manager for years, the way he acts and gives you belief. The boys are buzzing he's going to be the permanent manager.
Murray has had doubters at every step of a career that’s taken him from the junior ranks onto Arbroath, Dundee United, Hibs, Bidvest Wits in South Africa and Queen’s Park before stepping back up to the top flight with County 18 months ago. "You always have people, no matter what sort of player you are, who don't think you're good enough. Some fans love you, some don't.
"I have maybe had chances in previous years that I've never finished, but in these past few years, I've become more clinical. Hopefully that continues. I’ll keep wearing these boots! I've not changed them in a while because I've been scoring. Not all season. I can't remember how long though.”
