In a career-spanning tour kick-off, at Leeds First Direct Arena, the Glasgow rock titans mix copper-bottomed classics and obscure gems
“Come on, Leeds!” Jim Kerr shouts from out of the darkness, as the two-note throb of Waterfront kicks in like a thrilling metronome. Lights explode across the stage, and the Simple Minds frontman lets out a whoop of joy, already dad-dancing his way from side-to-side with the boyish enthusiasm of a favoured uncle on the wedding dancefloor. As infectious openers go, it takes some beating to top.
A mere 40 years on from the heady peaks of their art-rock acclaim, and slightly less since their tenure as one of the world’s biggest stadium bands, the Glasgow rock titans have found the sweet spot between their twinned history as post-punk experimentalists and epicures of polished pop.
That is reflected in a career-spanning tour kick-off at Leeds First Direct Arena, ahead of a wider run across the United Kingdom and Europe. Plenty of their contemporaries would be content to play the hits at this stage of their career, and Simple Minds ultimately do, but not before they dig into a back catalogue studded with obscure gems.
When they arrive, the copper-bottomed classics arrive en-masse; Glittering Prize, Belfast Child, Someone Somewhere in Summertime and the ubiquitous Don’t You all form part of a giddily terrific home straight. But the band won’t go quietly into the night, and return for an encore that grows legs with every song. “We’re just warming up!” Kerr cries after a soaring Alive and Kicking. Leeds wouldn’t let them leave if they could get away with it.
