Manchester United great Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he once rewarded Ryan Giggs with 10 contracts in a single season.
One could argue that facet of management was easier in Ferguson's heyday before football's finances spiralled. "The perfect example is Ryan Giggs. When Ryan signed his first contract at 17, he was on little, not a great deal. The next year, I gave him I think 10 contracts. So when he did well, we honoured it. We improved it. And when he did well again, we honoured it, and we improved it. And right through the very end of his career, we did that."
Recruiting young talent is a bigger business than ever before in football, with huge sums on offer to players at very early stages of their careers. However, Ferguson went on to say he believes it's folly handing youngsters big contracts too early because it drains them of motivation.
