If somebody falls asleep while driving with Tesla Autopilot, it's a scary situation but it most probably ends OK. Could this be the explanation behind the numbers Tesla publishes about lower crash rates with Autopilot on, or is that just because highways are safer?
Share to twitterTesla vehicles offer Autopilot, which will keep a car in its lane and tracking cars in front of it. They can go a few miles even if the driver falls asleep.Recently, there have been a variety of debates and reports of people in Teslas on highways, asleep at the wheel, being driven by autopilot.
That's clearly something you don't want to have happened, but it's also vastly better than what happens if you fall asleep at the wheel of a car without Autopilot, which results in an accident a large fraction of the time. In fact, there is a strong suspicion that a very significant number of car accidents and fatalities are caused by falling asleep at the wheel.
At first, the numbers sound very impressive. However, in spite of repeated attempts, Tesla has declined to explain the difference between an"accident" and a"crash." The NHTSA number involves crashes reported to the police. There is speculation, which Tesla refuses to clarify, that"accident" might mean an airbag-triggering crash.
