Slow start is nothing Astros' Alex Bregman hasn't shaken before
Astros third baseman Alex Bregman was without an extra-base hit this season until Tuesday, when he homered, above, and doubled against the Pirates. Another home run came Wednesday.PITTSBURGH — Alex Bregman searched for the number he’s spent seven seasons trying to forget. Specifics of so many slow starts are scattered in his mind, but every now and then, he likes to reference the first.
“I mean, I started my career oh for uhh …” Bregman said this week, still trying to remember the exact extent of his futility. He hit .233 last April and had a .708 OPS last May. During his first full season in 2017, Bregman slugged .310 with just five extra-base hits in his first 98 plate appearances. Pick an early-season portion of any season, and there’s a chance Bregman scuffled.He singled and worked three walks during Monday’s series-opening win against the Pirates. Bregman exited the game with a .163 batting average and still without an extra-base hit in his first 52 plate appearances of the season.
Inside the clubhouse after Houston’s 8-2 win, Bregman greeted a small group of reporters awaiting another player to interview. He wore a wide smile in his response to a rhetorical question: “How’s it going?”Bregman unlocked something across the final two games of the Astros’ series against the Pirates. He struck his first three extra-base hits of the season, including home runs in each game.
