Manager Terry Francona said the Guardians looked 'heavy-legged' as they lost to Kansas City in the only Monday afternoon game on MLB's schedule.
“I get it, it’s a day game we were a little sluggish,” said manager Terry Francona. “We ran into some outs that didn’t help. The guys looked like their legs were a little heavy today.”
Kansas City’s first run was gift-wrapped by shortstop Gabriel Arias. Bobby Witt Jr., who deserves some AL MVP votes, sent a two-out grounder to Arias in the third. Witt can run, but he received an assist from Arias’ high throw to first. Witt was credited with a single, but it could have easily been an error.“You won’t see that happen again,” said Arias, through interpreter Agustin Rivero, who hit his 10th homer and drove in two runs.
In the seventh, the Guardians appeared to have a chance to extend their 4-2 lead. Bo Naylor walked and stole second to start the inning. Myles Straw sent a grounder to short and Naylor tried to advance to third. That’s always a risky play and it bit the Guardians. “That’s who we are,” said Francona. “But again, we always talk about being aggressive and intelligent. One without the other doesn’t help enough.”
