Anastassia Oborotova has been skating roller derby for nearly half her life, and she's still at it with the Pile O' Bones club in Regina.
She does remember the first time she connected with her first club, though. During those bouts, a jammer from each team attempts to break through the pack of skaters in order to lap opposing players and score points. Blockers in that pack try to stop them from doing so. Oborotova is a pivot, which is a blocker with the ability to tag out and replace the primary jammer in mid-jam. It’s a position that requires intense track awareness, whip-fast strategizing and constant analysis in the chaos of gameplay.
Now, she’s a coach, referee and acting chair of PBDC as well as an assistant coach and head ref for Team Sask — in addition to being a semi-casual skater who still enjoys a good scrimmage to scratch an itch.Article content Those elements, plus the close-knit culture, have kept her on skates for nearly half her life — and happily.
