Smith: Considering the state of AFC South, Texans should use high pick on QB
The No. 1 pick of the 2021 NFL draft, quarterback Trevor Lawrence is blossoming in his second season with the Jaguars.Trevor Lawrence, a former No. 1 overall pick, threw for 368 yards on the same day while the Jacksonville Jaguars blasted the Titans 36-22 in Nashville, Tenn.
Lawrence threw for three touchdowns and posted a sparkling 121.9 passer rating, while the Texans fell to 1-11-1. And during a season when the still-uneven Jaguars have risen to 5-8, a 23-year-old QB is beginning to live up to the hype that started following him the moment he started winning in college at Clemson.
Tennessee is a flat 7-6. The Titans just fired their general manager midseason. Ryan Tannehill is not the long-term answer at QB in Nashville. Mike Vrabel’s team is still Derrick Henry or bust.Factor in that Jacksonville — yes, Jacksonville — is the only team in the division with a potential franchise QB on its roster right now, and a forward-thinking Texans organization would see a serious opportunity in mid-December of 2022.To fix the QB position next season, building toward 2024 and ’25.
“All of the things that we want to see from our quarterback that was required of the quarterback position is what Davis did,” Texans coach Lovie Smith said Monday. “I’m going to also add that Jeff threw the ball. It’s one thing when you say you know what we’re going to do when Jeff’s out there. Well, Jeff threw a couple of passes, too. It’s not just one thing. There’s a lot of different ways we can go with this game plan, and we’re excited to get deeper into it.
