San Diego State appears unable to continue hosting iconic postgame fireworks/music show
Indications are the elaborate fireworks show synchronized to music, a San Diego staple that dates back nearly half a century, is not a fit — literally — at the new stadium.“I don’t know that we’ve officially said one way or the other,” said John David Wicker, SDSU’s director of athletics, “but the challenge is where do you shoot fireworks from because we don’t have the largest parking lot west of the Mississippi anymore.The Aztecs don’t feel compelled to find a solution, either.
“We love SkyShow,” Wicker said. “Obviously, it has been a phenomenal partnership. It’s definitely something the community of San Diego looks forward to. SkyShow pyrotechnicians launched shells of up to 12” at one point in the event’s history, though the biggest shells were reduced to 10” and are 8” now.That wasn’t a problem at the old stadium, which was located at the center of the Mission Valley property and surrounded by 15,000 parking spots.
Most of the parking spaces will be located east, where housing and retail are planned, and south, where the Innovation District is planned, of the stadium. “Obviously, we’re always going to look for different ways to amplify the fan experience,” Wicker said. “If that’s something that we can come to , then we would certainly look at it.”
Bruggema gave it “a 50/50 chance” that there will be a SkyShow this year in some fashion or another at one site or another. The key is finding a sponsor to cover costs .
