For most American workers, retirement savings are made up of three parts: Social Security, workplace pension plans or 401 plans, and your own savings. But for many older Americans today, two of these three pillars aren't holding up. ," retirement and aging expert Elizabeth White writes that this current system is a "wobbly three-legged stool," and that Social Security is the only leg people can rely on.
Social Security provides a guaranteed income for most American workers later in life. In June 2020, the average American retiree received a monthly benefit of about $1,500, according to data from the"Social Security is the only leg of the three-legged stool that is holding somewhat steady," White writes. "The others? Not so much." For many Americans, saving isn't an option.
