The new Society in East Dallas will serve afternoon tea.

For the next few weeks, when Muns and her team will not have a working bakery, Society will not be taking orders for its cakes, cupcakes and cookies.Muns started Society Bakery in her home on Dallas’ M Streets in December 2003. She eventually opened her own shop at 3426 Greenville Ave., on Feb. 15, 2005, at a time when cupcake shops were on the rise.

For context, Muns opened a few months before Sprinkles cupcakes debuted in Beverly Hills in 2005 and eventually expanded to Dallas. Sprinkles was arguably one of the most famous cupcake shops in the country, and it helped keep cupcakes in the national conversation as unaffiliated, local companies like Society thrived.“Name your theme and Society Bakery can work with it,” reads a 2005The News

praised Muns’ “unusually moist and rich” petit fours and “innocent and irresistible” M&M cookies. We wrote about the sweet rolls, French macarons and whoopie pies, too. In my house, the coconut and red velvet cupcakes are brought home at least monthly. Like so many chefs of a certain era, Muns grew up watching PBS cooking shows as a kid. She went another direction in early adulthood, getting a master’s degree in business. It was at age 30 that she turned toward to her childhood passion and opened Society. The shop remained a talker for years. “Actress Kirsten Dunst, singer Erykah Badu and pastry chef and television personality Duff Goldman are a few celebrities who have been spotted dropping by Society,”wrote in 2012.

In the new shop on Skillman Street, Muns expects to offer a similar bakery menu but an expanded experience, where customers can linger for afternoon tea and scones or even organize birthday parties, showers and the “it” activity among some moms right now: mahjong.Society Bakery is closed at 3610 Greenville Ave., Dallas, as of July 24, 2023. It is expected to reopen with a tea room at 1926 Skillman St., Dallas, in late August or early September 2023.
