Humans react poorly to trash talk, even if it's coming from a cute robot that's been programmed to insult them, researchers found
asked participants to play a strategic game 35 times against SoftBank's humanoid robot, Pepper. Pepper is intended to be a companion robot who works at airports, malls, or hospitals.
Researchers kept the insults pretty tame. "Over the course of the game your playing has become confused," or "I have to say you are a terrible player," Pepper said over the course of the game. "One participant said, 'I don't like what the robot is saying, but that's the way it was programmed so I can't blame it,'" lead author Aaron Roth wrote.
