Solomon: Sean Payton the perfect target for Texans' rejuvenation project
In 2006, his debut campaign as the Saints' head coach, Sean Payton reached the NFC Championship Game with a team that was 3-13 the season before. Three years later, New Orleans won the Super Bowl.“Absolutely,” Sean Payton said when radio host Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports tried to ask him if he would consider taking the Texans’ head coaching job.I never begin a column with a quote, so clearly, I was stunned by the former New Orleans Saints coach’s rapid response.
Need I mention that the Texans don’t know what they are doing? Sorry. Since that has been a central theme in an estimated 73 percent of columns for the last three years, I never know when it is best to drop that in. For as much money as Houstonians have given to the Texans in 21 championship-less seasons, that shouldn’t be an issue.
Payton coached the Saints for 15 years. None of the others the Texans have interviewed or plan to interview have even held a head coaching position before. He said practicing against the Texans in training camp gave him a chance to “meet a lot of the different personalities and people involved in the building.”At least 90 percent of the personalities and people involved in the building in those years are gone.
We’re not talking about a powerhouse division. Jacksonville was the only team with a winning record this season, and the Jaguars barely topped the .500 mark at 9-8.Payton also pointed to the Texans’ strong draft capital, though they would have to give up a piece of that to land him.
