It had been expected that the change would not be made until September 2025, but it’s now believed it could happen at the start of the year.
An upcoming UK VAT policy change, which will also affect Scotland, could lead to a steep increase in costs for parents with children at fee-paying schools.
The standard rate of VAT is 20 per cent; the Labour government intend to use the VAT charged on school fees to fund 6,500 new teachers in England. However, today the i reported that they have learned VAT could begin being applied to private school fees as soon as January 2025, meaning some parents could see their fees soar by up to 20 per cent at the start of next year.
Speaking to The Edinburgh Reporter earlier this month he said: “This is a difficult decision that has been made – the 20 per cent is happening – it will have to go through a fiscal event, so I think that will be the budget later this year, which will have to then be in a finance bill, so it’s not going to happen this side of the year.”
